South Depot

The South Depot is located at the southern end of the Red Line. It belongs to the Qianzhen District of Kaohsiung City. The base is located at Zhongshan and Zhongan Road in Kaohsiung City. It is bounded within National Highway No. 1, Zhongshan 4th Road (the main trunk road of Kaohsiung City), Zhongan Road (main trunk connecting Zhongshan 4th road and Taiwan Expressway No. 88), and the Sanguo Express Passage (connecting National Highway No. 1, Kaohsiung International Airport and Kaohsiung Port) and the Hongmaogang Elementary School. The R4A Caoya Station is situated within the Depot.

The road system around the South Depot is in impeccable. Drive north on Zhongshan 4th Road to get to the center of Kaohsiung within 10 minutes. Taking National Highway No. 1 (Zhongshan Expressway) via Zhongshan 4th Road entrance/exit ramp of National Highway No. 1, or Sanguo Express Passage to reach North Kaohsiung within 15 minutes. It is only 3.5 kilometers or around 5-10 minutes by car from Fengshan interchange by taking eastern route of Zhongan Road connecting to the Expressway No. 88. One can easily reach Daliao or towns and villages in Pingtung. One could also reach greater Kaohsiung region with Kaohsiung Metro. Heading north to connect to Kaohsiung Train Station and can reach Daxie and Pingtung Townships in Kaohsiung County. One can also make use of the Taiwan High Speed Rail Zuoying Station. Heading south to Kaohsiung International Airport and Xiaogang district. The traffic is simply very convenient.

The South Depot is close; only 2.7 km from to Kaohsiung International Airport. It is only one stop away by Kaohsiung Metro (R4-R4A). It is also only about 2.6 kilometers away from Kaohsiung Port. The total area of the South Depot is 26 hectares, mainly used as the MRT maintenance plant. It is designed to function as a three-level maintenance plant for the MRT. It also function as the headquarter of KRTC and Controlling Center of the Metro system. The maintenance plant together with the associated roads, covers an area of approximately 17.9 hectares. There is still 8.7 hectares available for other developmental projects.

The Taroko Group has built Taroko Park in the commercial zone of the South Depot in May 2016. In order to improve the operation, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi upgraded the original mall. “SKM Park Outlets Kaohsiung Caoya ” was opened for operation in August 2022.

SKM Park is a brand-new type of international lifestyle compound Lifestyle Outlets. Different from the traditional Outlets, it is positioned as "international-class life complex", where you can see world popular brands, well-known specialty restaurants, and large-scale life-themed stores. Views, comfortable outdoor seating, and diversified entertainment and lifestyle facilities create a unique semi-open-air shopping park.

In addition, KRTC leased the initial maintenance management building to Huayuan Development Company, whom converted it into Holiday Garden Hotel aimed to be a parent-child hotel making the whole hotel to be a theme park or a playground for children. The design style incorporated with the local elements of airport, harbor, Metro and Go-kart racing themed suites, totaling 96 rooms. It was opened for operation in November 2018.
